dc.description.abstractThe objective of the paper is to assess English language proficiency of non-English major university students in Serbia, measured by English proficiency test score, as well as to examine whether there are differences in English language proficiency among subgroups of the participants. The third aim of the study is to consider the possibility of the existence of alternative indicators of English language proficiency: the students’ grades in English language, their self-evaluation of English language proficiency and their self-evaluation of success in English language learning. For this purpose, we conducted a survey with non-English major university students. The methods of data collection involved a questionnaire survey and English language proficiency testing. The obtained data were processed by means of descriptive statistics, tests for differences in variance and correlation analysis as recommended statistical methods. The results of the study demonstrated that the participants’ English proficiency test results were above average. Regarding the differences across the subgroups of the participants, the results indicated the differences in English language proficiency among the students of the faculties of different scientific fields. Finally, the results showed that the participants’ self-evaluation of English language proficiency, their grades in English language and their self-evaluation of success in English language learning, could be used as alternative indicators of their English language proficiency.en_US
