Issue Date: 2023
Abstract: The paper aims to shed light on recognizing mythical patterns and archetypes within the postmodernist short story “Isis’s Clasp” by Slavica Garonja Radovanac. It also strives to present how these patterns and archetypes subsist, how they are incorporated into postmodernist poetics, and how the story’s main heroine treats them. Observing the narrative flow and the two intertwining realities, the paper discusses their constitution and importance for the story, as well as for the main heroine. The analysis of the Great Mother and the myth of Isis reveals the underlying layer – the mythological layer of the story, further facilitating recognition and separation from the author’s pen, which, inspired by the knowledge of folklore and myth, created a mythical world biding in the postmodern, contemporary world. Mythical patterns as ways of recognizing the primordial in the modern world reveal their multiple functions, which are of great importance for the story and its interpretation, as they open a new dimension of interpreting and understanding the reality around us, which, at first glance, seems rather ordinary. By following the myth of Isis, the research also considers the Great Mother as Isis’s counterpart and the re-created archaic representation of the creative principle. Also, by following the mythical patterns, it can be observed that the symbolism of parts of reality, although fragmentarily, uses its elements to create a complex and multi-meaning narrative reality, with each element bearing equal importance, and the author invites us to carefully think through each part individually and thus see the whole picture.
