Abstract: Due to the development of scientific knowledge nowadays, the educational policies in many countries of the world, including Serbia, have prioritized the reformand the support to the development of a preschool child. It is suggested to organize the activities and learning situations in which 3‒6 year old children could develop their skills‒ observing, asking questions, comparing, identifying similarities and differences, exploring, analyzing and concluding ‒ and consequently build a foundation of knowledge needed for understanding scientific concepts in their future education, and for developing a positive attitude towards learning. Inquiry based learning activities involve different aspects of children’s personality, enable peer interaction and communication, help children express their opinions, argue and defend their views. The paper presents some examples of inquiry based learning activities in enviromental science (on the subject of plants), some ways of their implementation and the necessary conditions for supporting the development of a child through action.
