Сажетак: This paper provides a comparative analysis of William Faulkner’s novel Absalom, Absalom! and Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, paying special attention to their depiction of the past and the elements of tragedy. Starting from Faulkner’s impact on Latin American literature of the second half of the 20th century known as “the Boom”, to the concepts of Yoknapatawpha and Macondo and the postmodernist approach to history, the paper strives to provide an insight into the strong connection between Faulkner’s and Márquez’s portrayal of their characters’ tragic past, which is inseparable from their present and which will accompany them until the apocalyptic ending of both novels. Furthermore, particular attention is devoted to the elements of irony, which are crucial for any attempt of revisiting history. Since they are much more dominant in Márquez’s narrative, they also represent a major difference between his and Faulkner’s approach to the sense of tragedy.
