Authors: Jerotijevic Tisma, Danica
Issue Date: 2011
Abstract: A concise recapitulation of the views on diachrony and synchrony as signifi cant factors in determining the typological classifi cation of languages throughout the history of linguistic thought is presented in the introduction of the paper as well as the particularities in the methodological approach of Joseph Greenberg, an American linguist (1915-2001). Henceforth the attention is focused on the demonstration of some fundamental characteristics of the state-process model, in which both synchrony and diachrony are incorporated, especially emphasizing those aspects distinct from other methods in studying linguistic typology. Specifi c examples given by Greenberg himself are likewise included in the paper, and the advantages as well as defi - ciencies of the model in comparison with others will be provided furthermore.
