Sudbina kao agon života i smrti u pripoveci ,,Mara milosnica'' Ive Andrića

Abstract

In this paper we will take a closer look at Ivo Andrić’s short story titled “Mara Milosnica”. The aim of the paper is to discover and examine the poetic assumptions which contribute to the construction of Mara’s identity. Firstly, the research led us to Mara’s prehistory. We recognized the important role of the archetypical mother figure in Mara’s destiny, as well as the principles of identifications of destinies. The influence of hereditary sin is fatal to Mara and leads her towards degeneration. We also approached the analysis of the heroine from the aspect of Girard’s understanding of a victim and of the victim mechanism in which Mara is recognized as an outcast of the religious and social community. Having examined Mara’s vision of Virgin Mary, we brought forth the important theme of the short story and that is death and the awaiting of the Last Judgment.
