Abstract: Owing to the abstraction of its content, on the one hand, and the nature of a child’s thinking, on the other, the development of mathematical concepts in preschool education is a considerable challenge for preschool teachers. Therefore, the process of preschool mathematics education should be organized in such a way that mathematical concepts are developed in the context which is close to the child and the objects of his/her immediate surroundings. With the aim of creating such learning environment, the authors of the present paper draw attention to a puppet as a pedagogical tool and point to its importance and possibilities of its use in developing early mathematical concepts. In that context, the authors call attention to the benefits of using a puppet in preschool education, and in preschool mathematics education in particular. By making use of concrete examples, the authors focus attention on the possibilities of utilizing a puppet in developing mathematical concepts in the content area of numbers, geometry, spatial relations, and measurement and measures.
