Modalne karakteristike futuroida u srpskom jeziku

Abstract

Authors who belong to different linguistic branches (e.g. Jespersen (1924) in theoretical linguistics,

Dahl (1985) in language typology and Langacker (2008) in cognitive linguistics) claim that there is a con- nection between modality and futurity. For this reason, in this paper, we tried to analyze this connection,

examining a present verb form expressing future time. It is, in fact, a hybrid form which consists of the enclitic form of the verb hteti (eng. want) combined with the particle da and the present form of a lexical verb. The analyzed sample was collected from the Serbian daily newspapers and examined from the point of view of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. According to the analyzed examples, semantic categories of modality and futurity are intertwined and the most typical modal meaning of the examined construction is the one of volition.
