Abstract: | In this paper we examine the dialectical relationship between the figures of angels and mothers, angelology and motherhood in biblical texts and Serbian poetry. The figure of an angel that appears in the analyzed poems is a kind of shaped figure of an angel approaching parenthood, who participates in those moments of a woman’s life when she becomes a mother, and he follows the child’s life from conception to death, when his own being rises above the dead. The space of the angelological shaping of death appears as the central place of connecting mothers and angels in Serbian literary angelology, and the motive complex developed from this connection is wide: a dead mother becomes an angel, a dead child becomes an angel, an angel kills a child to heal a family, an angel resurrects a child. In addition to the analysis of the mentioned motives, we also emphasize those that show the birth and care of a child’s angel, and the construction of a home and family in which angels equally participate. |
