Abstract: This chapter addresses the critical need for enhancing energy efficiency and economic rationale in municipal solid waste (MSW) management, focusing on collection and transportation – the costliest segments. Utilizing digital technologies, including GIS, IoT, and data analytics, the authors develop a practical methodology for optimizing waste collection and transportation processes, particularly in developing countries. The study tests this methodology in 11 Serbian municipalities, demonstrating significant travel distance and time reductions through optimized routes compared to existing ones. Reduction in total distance travelled ranges from 5.1 to 15.1%, depending on the municipality. These optimizations lead to reduced energy consumption, environmental preservation, improved service quality, and the promotion of circular economy practices. This chapter highlights the importance of digital technologies in MSW management, offering a model that can be adapted to various municipal sizes and contexts, thus presenting a scalable and sustainable approach to modern waste management challenges.
