Abstract: The aim of the present paper is to point to some issues in cognitive linguistic theory where phonological research can make a contribution. Our spoken data includes a sample of 3283 words divided over ten recordings (24min 25s). By analyzing the intonational properties of speech produced by female native speakers of Serbian, we seek to understand the activation of metaphor in thought (see MÜLLER, TAG 2010). We first identify the potentially metaphorical expressions, and then determine which of these could be considered as accentuated verbal metaphoric expressions based on the prosodic stress. Although the analysis does seem to point to a particular degree of foregrounding of metaphorical content by means of intonation units, accentuated verbal metaphoric expressions constituted 37,40% of the linguistic expressions in our data
