Abstract: Requirements for environmentally friendly materials that do not have an impact or have a much less harmful impact on the environment nowadays are increasingly demanded in all areas of application. One such area of application is motor vehicles, namely the braking system. A particularly large number of different materials are used in brake pads, which are an important part of the braking system. As the brake pads wear, these generate tiny particles that are released into the environment, and they contain these materials. Such substances can be environmentally hazardous to both human health and the environment. Different types of brake pads that are applied today in the modern braking systems in terms of their composition are analysed in this paper. Furthermore, different materials have different intensity of wear in specific operating conditions. In addition to the different types of brake pads, this paper presents an overview of the factors that influence the wear intensity of brake pads that various authors have come up with in their research. Some authors' conclusions under which operating conditions generate the highest concentration of particulates resulting from brake wear are also given in the paper.
