Abstract: | The child's right to life, survival and development is at the same time one of the guiding and basic principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which protects the fundamental and closely intertwined personal interests of the child. Life and survival are prerequisites for realising all other child rights, while child development is their basic goal. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, despite certain dilemmas that may be caused by the content of its preamble, remains neutral regarding the issue of the beginning of childhood and human life in general and the problem of legal protection of the unborn child. The best interest of the child also requires ensuring the quality of life of the child, which should not be below human dignity, which essentially represents an ideal that is not easily achievable in societies that lack available resources. At the same time, the child's right to development is comprehensive and multi-layered, including the overall development of the child in accordance with his/her developmental abilities. |
