Abstract: The work tries to shed light on the phenomenon of duplicity observed in relation to the main female characters in Milutin Uskoković’s novel Čedomir Ilić. Doubleness is interpreted within the typology proposed by Ljiljana Ćuk, and therefore the presence of „I-doubles“ and „you-doubles“ is observed, which means that the splitting of the heroines takes place on two levels. The analysis is first of all directed towards the initial moment of manifestation of double personalities, as well as the causes that lead to that manifestation. Furthermore, it turns out that duplicity is closely related to eroticism and seduction, or more precisely, that it is manifested by (not) accepting one’s own sexuality, which is why Baudrillard’s observations about second nudity and seduction proved to be useful in the interpretation. The issue of emancipation was also recognized as important for the theme of duplicity in Uskoković’s novel, with which the motif of the ideal of the new woman is linked.
