Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine the status of conceptual metaphor in the political discourse of the 19th century, using the genre of stenographic notes from 1898 as an example. The corpus consists of the Stenographic Notes from the Sessions of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Serbia for the year 1898. The material for this study was excerpted from the fi rst two sessions held in 1898. The analysis was conducted using analytical-descriptive methods and content analysis. The conceptual metaphor is approached from a cognitive-linguistic perspective. It was found that conceptual metaphors frequently appear in the examined corpus, representing a typical feature of 19th-century political discourse. All three types of conceptual metaphors (structural, orientational, and ontological) were identified. The orientational metaphor plays a special role, performing various functions in the assembly notes (both in debates and in procedural parts). The historical context has a signifi cant impact on the use of metaphors related to Alexander Obrenović and his position within the framework of absolutist power.
