Сажетак: The paper examines the status of stage directions in Borislav Mihailović Mihiz’s play The Commander Sailer. Contrary to the traditional understanding of stage directions as secondary dramatic units, we will point out their expanded functions both on the structural and ideological- semantic levels of Mihiz’s play. In this regard, stage directions are explained primarily as elements of the organization of dramatic space – as a more broadly understood space in which the dramatic action unfolds, but also as a symbolic-scenic element in the construction of the main character’s identity. On the other hand, stage directions have been interpreted as a means of psychological motivation as well as the individualization of the hero. As a result of combining these two narrower functions, stage directions were characterized as a precondition for monitoring the dramatic composition, the essential meaning of the structure of the dramatic action. At the same time considering Mihiz’s modern awareness of the fluid boundaries between dramatic and prose expression, of the diverse possibilities of linguistic shaping of a dramatic text, we interpreted the stage directions as one of the primary signalers of the polygenre character of Mihiz’s drama, ultimately, as the bearers of its epic potential.
