| Abstract: | Paramilitaries (PM) are informal or formally registered entities that provide military or security services outside of regular armed forces. They are most often used by governments, either as part of a strategy of outsourcing military power or to provide protection to politicians in crisis areas. Multinational corporations hire these firms to protect oil fields, mines and transport routes or to secure ships from pirates. Paramilitaries, including some private military companies, and certainly terrorist groups, use a wide range of financing methods to sustain their military activities as well as the fighters who make up the armed groups. Financing of private paramilitary formations is a complex and controversial topic that includes legal, economic, political and security aspects. The paper provides a brief overview of the state of affairs in the observed area. |
