Abstract: The development of the automotive industry, as well as the development of modern on-board systems, require detailed tests from the aspect of functionality and safety of the developed systems. The implementation of new materials, sensors and new braking systems requires advanced, reliable and highly accurate evaluation methods. This paper is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of modern experimental methodologies used to test innovative brake solutions. The paper presents a detailed analysis of three types of experimental approaches to testing innovative brake solutions, i.e. the brake testing in laboratories, field tests and computer simulations. By analyzing the advantages and limitations of each of the mentioned approaches, the paper indicates the necessity of integrating hybrid testing methods (so-called Hardware-in-the-Loop - HiL systems), which successfully bridge the gap between isolated laboratory conditions and the complexity of real traffic.
