The extract was prepared from fresh leaves of Jovibarba heuffelii (Schott.) A Löve & D. Löve and used to evaluate the antimicrobial activity against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacteria as well as against fungi. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using broth microdilution method. For determination of the total phenolic and flavonoid contents methanolic, ethyl acetate, acetone and diethyl ether extracts were prepared. The phenolic content of the extracts was determined spectrophotometrically using Folin—Ciocalteu reagent and the results are expressed as gallic acid equivalents (GAE). Jovibarba heuffelii extract showed moderate antibacterial activity, while its antifungal activity was significantly higher. The high contents of total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids indicated that these compounds contribute to the antimicrobial activity. © 2010 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.-
