The main goal of this paper is to analyze the way in which diverse terms for different types of paroemia are defined in Serbian and Spanish. In order to carry out this research and find parallel and divergences between Serbian and Spanish regarding the definition of these expressions, we will use two general dictionaries and six terminological dictionaries. The following terms will be analysed: 1) poslovica/refrán, proverbio o adagio, 2) izreka/dicho, 3) sentenca o sentencija/sentencia, 4) aforizam/aforismo, 5) maksima/máxima y 6) apotegma/apotegma. The first thing that draws our attention is the fact that for one Serbian term there are various Spanish terms such as the word poslovica and its equivalents refrán/proverbio/adagio and vice versa, such is the case of Serbian words izreka/izričaj/reč/uzrečica, which are equivalents for the Spanish term dicho. All these words are much more exhaustively defined in terminological dictionaries, especially in those for literary terms. Moreover, what these dictionaries frequently offer is a vast amount of additional information in relation to etymological origin of these words, their use over time, their general features and the relation with other similar terms, etc. So as to define one specific term, the authors of the dictionaries often use other related terms or they suggest we look them up, which means that a lot of these definitions are circular and rather unhelpfulen_US
