On the example of the novel In My Brother’s Shadow by the German writer Uwe Timm, the analysis will show that Germans who were direct participants in the Second World War “remember” the dark Nazi past in a different way than their descendants, who tended to critically confront the burden of the past that they had inherited unwillingly. The aim of this paper is to analyze the ways in which the protagonist of the novel/author and members of his family face the infamous past that influenced the identity of the family, but also the writer’s personal identity.en_US
