Abstract

The subject of this paper is three pragmatic markers – but, however and nevertheless. The aim is to explore their essence by examining their syntactic and semantic features. The paper encompasses the markers’ meanings as well as the functions they perform in sentences and utterances. We have come to the conclusion that the contrastive expressions examined in this paper do not share a large number of common syntactic features despite being semantically related. Moreover, after carefully examining the mobility of the connectives within the sentence, we concluded that the connectives however and nevertheless have distinct positional dynamics, i. e., they can occupy all three syntactic positions, while the connective but can only occupy initial and medial position. Nevertheless, we suggest that a more detailed analysis of a more diverse corpus might render different results.
