In this paper we have studied the hypothetical quotation in political and legal Serbian discourse. Our corpus consists of medieval charters, as well as texts from both the govrenment and church's law practice. The paper falls under the category of historical pragmatics. The examples from medieval times are explained with the theory of legal norm, while the examples form the 19th century are studied via relevance theory. Both periods are characterized bu the use of anticipating hypothetical quotation, which is based on the ritual of oath in which implicit meanings are put forward.en_US
