The aim of this paper is to read semantic variations of the motif of hard ground, which is as well as independent in the world of these stories, and simultaneously the true frame of the whole work of Ivo Andrić. Two short stories reveal the (un)spoken hard web (epic, story, reality, people, poetics) of existence of two main characters, Alija Đerzelez and Mustafa Madzar. Both of protagonists are closely connected to hard ground as a semantic and semiotic field (full both with myth, legend, and human stories) on which they wish to maintain their two divided faces, but they end up in a universal death of an true (isolated) individual.en_US
