Abstract

From the moment when Asinius Pollio, on the orders of Augustus, embodied Caesar’s idea and established the first public library in ancient Rome, in the following centuries there were dozens of these institutions. In the broadest sense, in this paper the author deals with the the types of services that these libraries provided to their users. Within the provisions of library services, special attention was paid to examining the possibility of taking out and using library materials outside the library, as well as the circle of users of library services, i.e. whether the users were members of the upper classes and the intellectual elite associated with them, or whether it was wider circle of users.
