Abstract: | The analysis of papers on pseudocoordination and pseudo-dependence in Serbian showed that pseudocoordination occurs in historical syntax only, and that it represents a pre-hypotaxic stage which only incorporates subordinating syntactic structures, such as complementation (supplementary), realized by formal syntactic coordination (using a coordinating instead of subordinating conjunction). Pseudocoordination is a widespread and scientifically well-established term in syntactic research of historical linguistics, as it exists in many Indo- European (and non-Indo-European) languages. Unlike the generally accepted international term pseudocoordination (which is not found in the form of pseudo-independence in Serbian), the term pseudo-dependence is used exclusively in Serbian (its international form pseudo-subordination has not been recorded in use). That term was introduced by Lj. Popović for three types of syntactically dependent sentences, to which D. Klikovac added two more types. The performed syntactic criterial analysis showed that there are no cases with pseudo-dependent sentences functioning as independent sentences, but they rather represent semantically specific subtypes of dependent sentences. The analysis of papers on pseudo-dependence showed that the „precept” on pseudo-dependence does not rest on any exact syntactic criteria and that the confirmation of the existence of that category would necessarily „ignore” a large number of syntactically indisputable facts and criteria. Hence the term pseudo-dependence, unlike the term pseudocoordination, has no scientific justification. |
