USTANOVLJENJE BRAKA SA MANUSOM

Abstract

The circumstances in which the ancient Romans lived, especially those related to the agricultural society and household production economy, had influenced their understanding that only a high birth rate and collective spirit based on traditional, republican moral values, would provide them inner peace and benefit them in conquering new territories. That is why the marriage with manus – a marriage of distinctly patriarchal character, where the wife comes under the power of the husband – was so dominant in the beginning. The paper discusses confarreatio, coemptio and usus which represented three possible ways for establishing this type of marriage.
