Issue Date: 2024
Abstract: The subject of the paper was an analysis of Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction short story The Star, relying on the insights of existentialist philosophers, primarily the philosophical theories of Sorren Kierkegaard, Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre. The aim of the paper was to explore the existential questions raised in the story due to the cosmic cataclysm, as well as the eternal question of man’s place in the infinite cosmos. Juxtaposing the existential dilemmas of the priest-astronaut, who confronts the absurdity of existence and the search for meaning, with the philosophical frameworks of existentialist thought, the paper seeks to shed light on the universal human search for meaning and purpose in a universe full of uncertainty and impermanence.
