Abstract: | The paper explores various possibilities of applying poetry in children’s musical creativity in the teaching of music. The examination of the characteristics of children’s musical creativity in relation to the role of the literary text was carried out on the text of the poem “Three blind mice” by Peđa Trajković. Specifically, the approach involved connecting the literary text with appropriate musical content, creating a melody for the given literary text, and generating a melody that exclusively conveys the content of the poem through musical elements without text. The research sample consisted of fourthgrade students of primary school (N = 53). The obtained results show that melodies created on the basis of the text differ from the ones created exclusively with musical elements. In addition, it was easier for students to perform the task on the basis of the literary text, according to all assessment criteria: in relation to the initial tone, motive and cadencing process. Qualitative data and indicators suggest that the literary text serves as essential support for students in creating a melody. However, using a literary text as motivation for students’ free musical expression requires a more intricate approach and methods adapted to children’s creativity. |
