Abstract: The aim of this paper is the status of conditional sentences introduced by the conjunction ako li in the administrative-legal style of the Serbian language in the 19th century. The corpus used consists of texts from constitutions (1835, 1838, 1869, 1888, 1901), as well as texts from the Collection of Laws, Regulations, and Edicts for the years 1840, 1845, and 1847. We employed syntactic semantic,functional-stylistic, historical-linguistic methods, and the method of legal theory. We have determined that the primary function of conditional sentences introduced by the conjunction ako li is to encode exceptions to rules, which can be realized either in two legal provisions or in a single legal provision. We have identified the basic temporal-aspectual paradigm, which corresponds to that of other types of conditional sentences. It has been noticed that this conjunction is often used with correlatives (a ono, onde, to, takov, takova, takovo), but there are also examples without correlatives. The use of this model most commonly serves normative-legal encoding, i.e., the tendency of legal style to fully encompass the reality it regulates.
