The right to protection of personal data, although it has long existed in the legal system, has been highlighted in the spotlight with the development of information and communication media and the prevalence of the Internet. Modern man cannot imagine everyday life without hours of surfing the Internet, which we pay for with personal data, either unconsciously or intentionally, following trends. In recent decades, we have become aware that every activity on the Internet is inscribed in our digital footprint, which large companies exploit in various ways, most often by selling the personal data of their users to marketing agencies or other business giants. Privacy, but also security and other human rights that protect the dignity of the individual are threatened, so the need for legal regulation of the problem has given rise to international and national acts in this area. Today, the most important document that seeks to preserve fundamental human rights and freedoms and protect personal data is the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union. Based on it, a positive law was passed in the Republic of Serbia, the Law on the Protection of Personal Data, which regulates the basic issues of how to handle personal data, as well as the rights that individuals have in exercising the protection of their data. In this paper, the author will devote attention to analyzing the content of the right to the protection of personal data, with a brief review of the conceptual definition of personal data, as well as the distinction between information and data.en_US
