The intention of the author of this paper is to review the economic inequality from the stand of economic science and economic reality and to point out to new causes of economic inequality in modern age, all in context of sustainable economic development. To measure inequality in economic theory in an objective sense is possible by applying statistical measures. There is also another, normative approach, which links inequality to the concept of social welfare where lower level of social welfare assumes higher level of inequalities at the given total income. Decrease or increase of inequality is the result of intervowen effects of malign and bening powers of divergence and convergence. Economic inequality lies on the fundamental economic law which underlines the connection between the capital gain rate and economic growth rate. Sustainable development is an overarching concept which assumes economic development, protection and preservation of environment and achievement of social justice. The goal of sustainable development is reducing of economic inequality Contemporary capitalism generates economic uinequality. Sustainable development and decrease of inequality are challenging tasks for the Republic of Serbia as a developing country. National strategy of sustainable development and corresponding departmental strategies promote sustainable development in a declarative way, but in practice we need to have more concrete programs and activities in order to change this concept.en_US
