Abstract: Although the Romans had a well-developed network of roads, Rome was primarily supplied with goods transported along the Tiber from the main port of Ostia. Ensuring the river’s navigability and preventing threats to navigation was therefore of paramount importance. Initial efforts in this regard came from individual rulers, but a dedicated service was established at an early stage to take care of the Tiber and its banks. Moreover, the praetor contributed to the maintenance and protection of all other public rivers and waterways by introducing several popular interdicts.
