Abstract: In this paper we analyze Danilo Kiš’s novel A Tomb for Boris Davidovich through the poetics of traps, which relies on each story’s analysis and also analysis of novel’s poetics and autopoetics as poetics of trap. Considering that Kiš’s novel starts with a story that is about traps and finishes with hero Darmolatov being caught in a trap with the narrator, or the narrator’s autobiographical self, who is afraid to announce his presence in a scene of Darmolatov’s trapping, we think that the poetics of trap, through its well timed and precise mechanism, which stays hidden, and through its effect of surprise and shock, served as a metaphor for Danilo Kiš to create fabular and syuzhet complexity and connections in every story (and all stories together) of A Tomb for Boris Davidovich and that this metaphor also served to create epochal, ontological, sociohistorical and metapoetic profile of Kiš’s novel. The aim of this paper is therefore to confirm the relevance and importance these concepts have for deeper understanding and better interpretation of Kiš’s novel.
