The aim of this paper is to explore the process of translating linguistic variations in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. By studying the Southern American dialect present in the novel, as well as the stylistic and expressive features of the characters’ speech, we analyzed the challenges the translator faced and described the various translation strategies employed. The analysis was based on a thorough examination of excerpts from the original version, focusing on important aspects of dialect use. By comparing these excerpts with their Serbian translations, we identified the translation strategies previously described. We concluded that the translator used a variety of strategies, such as cultural equivalence, paraphrasing, couplets, and others. The most frequently used strategies were cultural equivalence and phonetic adaptations. Cultural equivalence was necessary due to the many culturally specific elements in the novel, which required conveying meaning and context in a way that would be understandable to Serbian readers. The use of phonetic adaptations, which are also present in the original version, enabled the preservation of the authenticity of the characters’ speech.en_US
