In this paper, reported speech and authorial didascalia are examined from a stylistic perspective. It is assumed that the author employs submodels of direct speech to convey the speech of another character. The study of models for transmitting another character’s speech has three objectives. The primary objectives are to identify the submodels of direct speech and to describe the stylistic effects they produce. The secondary objective is to point out stylistically marked modifications of the basic model of direct speech as features of the poet’s idiolect. Using the analytical-descriptive method, it has been established that the two dominant models of direct speech are free introduced direct speech and free unintroduced direct speech. The poet’s stylistic specificity is reflected in the (non-)positioning of the authorial didascalia and in the choice of verbs within the authorial component of the direct speech construction. Depending on the nature of the verb used in the authorial didascalia, the following types are distinguished: didascalia with a verb marked by archaism; didascalia with a verb that defines the other character’s speech as exclamatory or interrogative; didascalia with a verb that prompts the other character to perform an action; and didascalia with a verb denoting an accompanying action.en_US
