Title: O jednoj posebnoj kategoriji slivenica u srpskom jeziku
Authors: Tomić, Gorica R.
Issue Date: 2020
Abstract: The paper deals with a special and relatively new category of syntagmatic blends in Serbian language (Bugarski 2014). Considering the perceived formal heterogeneity of the category, as well as the fact that it still represents a popular phenomenon in contemporary Serbian, the paper aims to more accurately describe and explain it, both from structural and semantic perspectives. The paper also attempts to delimit the category of ’proper’ syntagmatic blends by referring to some other categories in which lexical creativity and lexical innovation have resulted in structures comparable to blends produced at the syntagmatic level. The analyses are based on a corpus which includes 105 examples of syntagmatic blends listed in Bugarski (2019: 123–124) and a number of new ones collected from various sources. On the basis of their structural analysis, a more precise description of ’proper’ syntagmatic blends has been given. Additionally, based on the semantic analysis of these unconventional and attention-grabbing structures, as well as the analysis of their most frequent domains and purposes of use, it has been shown that they are predominantly used in the news media (especially in the coverage of important social and political issues) with the intention of producing stylistic, expressive, humorous and/or satirical effects on their readers and listeners.
