The paper examines certain formal and stylistic facets of the past time reference forms in Momčilo Nastasijević’s short story A Note about the gifts from my cousin Marija as well as their equivalents in English translation. The analysis showed structural diversity and high degree of stylistic efficiency of these forms in the Serbian language along with, primarily stylistic, departures in translation. The departures were observed through the prism of different syntactic and stylistic potential of the two languages in question as well as from the perspective of potentially different translation solutions.en_US
