Abstract: The author of the paper presents a short historical overview of the study of the need of systematic and planned actions directed towards the realization of national values in the institutions of the education system – schools. Having reviewed the contemporary pedagogical (and broader) literature, we realized that the question of realizing national values had always been popular. However, it can be asserted that the questions were more popular in the period before, than after the Second World War. There is no doubt that, in search of historical foundations of the concept of schooling and the system of upbringing and education based on national values, we would reach the roots of pedagogical actions and ideas in our country. The national, ethical and state interests occupy an important place in the demise of our educators, like Sveti Sava, Dositej Obradović and Vuk Karadžić. With the intention of going along the historical thread of the development of national and global values in upbringing and education in Serbia, in the process we performed a systematic review of the concepts and works of the famous Serbian pedagogues, such as Adžić, Bakić, Miodragović, Okanović, Petrović etc. By establishing model sources, we upgraded the aforementioned pedagogical great ideas with a representation of global and national values in the more modern pedagogical concepts from the late twentieth and the early twenty-first century.
