Abstract: With the present work we analyze the attitude of Serbian university students of Spanish as a foreign language towards reggaeton songs and the presence or absence of a critical reflection towards the content of these songs and the possible messages they entail. As a research instrument, a written and an oral survey have been used. The participants were 45 students of Spanish at two Serbian universities, whose knowledge of Spanish correspond to the levels B2-C1. The research confirms that young people in Serbia listen to reggaeton and that in the vast majority of cases they like this music style. As for their perception of reggaeton songs, rhythm and melody prevail at the expense of the messages they convey and the topics they deal with. Two interesting contradictions have been observed. First, although at the beginning of the survey our students emphasized the theme of love as main topic in reggaeton songs, the word love is almost absent from their comments after listening and reading the lyrics of the songs that were part of the questionnaire, and the only mention of love is made to indicate that it is distorted. And second, despite the fact that participants in the survey recognize the existence of a humiliating attitude towards women (in two of the three songs), this does not seem to bother them, even though 93.3% of respondents were girls. Finally, we propose the hypothesis of discourse awareness, to help educate students in values and raise their consciousness about the effects that any public discourse can generate.
