Through the conducted research and the analysis of the obtained results, the present paper deals with the most common problems and errors students make in logical deduction. In addition, the paper draws attention to a cause-and-effect relationship between certain logical errors (e.g. denying the antecedent and affirming the consequent) which students are most commonly not aware of as well as to the difficulties in understanding and solving problems from other branches of mathematics. The research presented in this paper was conducted during a period of a few years. We were interested in finding out whether drawing students’ attention to this segment of mathematical logic can lead to the improvement of their logical deduction. The results of our empirical research confirmed that introducing students to logical forms of deduction has a positive transfer on other branches of mathematics. We also argue that the results of the present research may help mathematics teachers understand the significance of mathematical logic for mathematics instruction.en_US
