Abstract: In this paper, using a comparative approach, we point out specific characteristics of the works of Archimandrite Danilo The Life of King Milutin and The Autumn of a King by Milutin Bojić, but we also pay special attention to the differences between these two works. The play The Autumn of a King opens up a new perspective that enables interpretation, perception and an approach to the hagiography from a different aspect, as well as innovation in the reading of prominent literary works. In the text of the hagiography, the cult of the ruler and the cult of the saint were built in parallel. The aforementioned cults suggest an opposition of the hagiography to Bojić’s drama, especially in terms of forming a modern subject as a lonely hero and an individual. Examining the universality and timelessness of the situation of the aforementioned works, we try to shed light on the transformations that are taking place in the character of the king. Using the motif of disguise and wearing masks, we focus on the analysis of the stability of the personality of King Milutin from the hagiography, as opposed to the instability of the personality of the unnamed king in The Autumn of a King. By presenting the perceived descriptions of the heroes, we made certain parallels in their characterization, which are explained in this paper.
