Abstract: Writers Danilo Kiš and Georges Perec survived the horrors of World War II as children. Having experienced the war in early childhood, they were unable to remember it the way adults do. As they both became orphaned in the war, the communicative framework of memory was narrowed, so research into the remaining material evidence emerged as an opportunity to get closer to the past. Based on the novels Hourglass and W, or the Memory of Childhood – photographs, letters, i.e. documents in the broadest sense, which remained after the war to bear witness to the existence of loved ones, as a mainstay in the reconstruction of the days past, can contribute to the understanding and interpretation of the past.
