Abstract: Numerous studies have shown that in certain situations women are more polite than men. Guided by the scarcity of research of this sort among younger population, the present study aims at determining whether there is a statistically significant differ- ence in expressing politeness among students of different gender when it comes to expressing demands, as well as at investigating the influence of power and social distance on the choice of phrases while expressing demands. The total of 86 partici- pants (42 male and 44 female) answered a questionnaire containing six situations examining various relationships of power and social distance. After the questionnaire, the frequency and chi-square test were employed to statistically analyse the obtained results, which showed that there was in fact a difference in expressing politeness and it went in favour of female participants. Nevertheless, male participants likewise used polite phrases yet only on certain occasions.
