Abstract: In this paper we have analyzed the most important tendencies within the studies of syntax of the 19th century Serbian language. The analysis includes: (a) grammar books and manuals issued during the 19th century; (b) traditional historical linguistic studies; (c) studies focused on concrete syntactic problems based on a 19th century corpus; (d) diachronic aspect within studies focused on modern language. In tradi tional methodology, syntax was neglected and syntactic research began to develop in the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century with the studies of authors such as: Ljiljana Subotić, Aleksandar Milanović, Isidora Bjelaković, etc. It can be noted that the approach of these studies depends on different factors, such as: the time period (prenormative – normative), whether the focus lies on a concrete problem based on a larger corpus or one presents a detailed description of a limited corpus, whether a research fo cuses on a synchronous description of a phenomenon or on its development, and whether it is important to give a comparison to the state in the modern language or some other linguistic idioms
