Abstract: In this paper we have observed the status and symbolism of flowers in the respective poetry of Jovan Jovanović Zmaj and William Wordsworth. Even though the poets originate from different countries and cultures, they both belong to the era of Romanticism. Through the symbolism of flowers, the studied poets have highlighted the main ideas of Romanticism – a manʼs connection to nature, where nature (and flowers) are used as a complement to describe human nature. Additionally, the poets employ flowers to illustrate certain spiritual, religious or mythological motifs. Both authors adapt the general principles of Romanticism to their environment and poetic sensibilities. Via the analysis of the symbolism behind different kinds of flowers, as well as flowers in general, we have presented the unique characteristics of each artist, and we have also noted certain parallels that allow both poets to be placed within the same category of the most prestigious Romantic poets of their time. Key words: poetry, Romanticism, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, William Wordsworth, flowers, children
