Abstract: The focus of the paper is to compare two translations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), a classic in children literature. The translation by Stanislav Vinaver is titled Alisa u čarobnoj zemlji (1923). The translation by Jasminka Ribar Stojiljković was first published in 1978 under the title Alisa u zemlji čuda. The aim of the paper is to present an overview of different translation techniques. We employ the method- ology developed by Peter Newmark. Thus, the first translation can be viewed as communicative, where the focus lies on transferring the contextual meaning of the text and its message, while the second translation falls under the category of semantic translation with emphasis on precise translation of the source text and aesthetic values it holds. We highlight the differences within the translated texts which are connected with cultural codes and dominant translational methods. We especially scrutinize exceptions that the translators have made in comparison to the source material. Additionally, we explore possible factors that motivated the use of said exceptions and changes (the prewar tradition of localizing texts, desire to make the text more comprehensible for its recipients, etc.).
