Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present different models of other`s speech in The Shorthand Notes of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Serbia in 1898. Examples from the first eight sessions of the first volume of shorthand notes have been used in the analysis. Also, the analysis has been limited only to debates, the oral part of the complex genre of shorthand notes. This paper has two main goals. The first is to establish a methodology for examining different types of transfer of other`s speech in the genre of shorthand notes, and the other is to examine whether and how the social circumstances affected the frequency of certain models. The general conclusion is that the shorthand notes distinguish two levels of speech transfer - the level of the editor and the level of the participants. At the first level, an unmarked model is direct speech, and at the second level, an unmarked model is reserved for indirect speech. The various criteria have been used to classify subtypes of transferred speech in both levels. The notion of other`s speech has been extended to notions of transfer of documents, self-quotes, and, especially important, hypothetical quotes.
