Abstract: In this paper we have studied verbs that denote different ways in which people satisfy their need of food and drinks, including verbs with neutral meaning, verbs with explicit semantic connotation, verbs containing the element of saturation, etc. After consulting a digital corpus and relevant dictionaries and literary works, the isolated verbs are scrutinized less from a gram- matical standpoint and more from the aspect of functional semantics, while contrasting two languages – Serbian and English. We have also reviewed the possibility of the contextualization of the studied verbs, their optional characteristics and their verbal categories in given contexts. Firstly, we have established the typical and less typical derivational patterns and manifestation of the meanings within the given verbs. Secondly, we made a classification of the verbs based on their dominant feature. Our tendency was to further understand the nuances between closely related synonyms via contextual profiles within both languages with a goal to establish the differ- ences on the derivational, lexical and semantic plane in the Serbian and English language.
