Abstract: This paper aims to examine two approaches to metaphor treatment that deem the communicative aspect as relevant. One approach emerged within the cognitive linguistics, as a response to Theory of Conceptual Metaphor − Deliberate Metaphor Theory. On the other hand, the Modified Explicature Analysis emerged within the inferential-cognitive pragmatics, i.e. the Relevance Theory. The goal of this paper is to investigate the similarities and differences between the two chosen approaches, as well as to establish potential parallels when metaphoric expressions are observed within their communicative function. The first segment of the paper deals with presenting the basic tenants of cognitive linguistics with the focus on the Deliberate Metaphor Theory, while the second segment deals with the Explicature Analysis (currently accepted and the most widespread approach within the cognitive pragmatics) and the Modified Explicature Analysis which we consider to be a sort of a counterpart to the Deliberate Metaphor Theory. In the third section of the paper, we examine the advantages and disadvantages of the approaches in focus more closely, as well as their possible similarities, with the goal of being one step closer to a unified theory of metaphor. We found that a parallel can be drawn between the deliberateness and the interpretive use of language. This can have significant implications for further research in the field of metaphoric expressions treatment.
